Scripture (Mark 2:22, NKJV):

"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins."

Devotional:

When Jesus spoke about new wine and wineskins, the people listening understood exactly what He meant. Wineskins were made from animal skin and used to hold wine. New wine was still fermenting, so it expanded. That meant it needed a fresh, flexible wineskin that could stretch with it. An old wineskin had already dried out and become stiff. If new wine was poured into it, the pressure would cause it to burst.

Jesus was using a physical example to explain a spiritual truth. He wasn’t just talking about wine. He was talking about hearts, minds, and people.

The Pharisees were stuck in tradition, routines, pride, and control. They wanted Jesus to fit into their old way of thinking instead of allowing Him to transform them. But Jesus didn’t come to patch up dead religion. He came to bring new life, relationship, freedom, grace, and truth.

Sometimes we do the same thing:

  • We ask God for healing but hold onto bitterness.

  • We ask for peace while feeding chaos.

  • We ask for growth while resisting correction.

  • We ask for a new season while clinging tightly to the old one.

Jesus was showing us that if God is going to do something new in our lives, we have to be willing to change too. New wine requires new wineskins. God cannot stretch a heart that refuses to bend.

Growth with Jesus is uncomfortable sometimes because stretching always is. But the stretching is not meant to destroy you - it’s preparing you to carry what God is pouring into your life.

Questions to consider:

  1. What old mindset, habit, or hurt might God be asking me to let go of?

  2. Am I truly open to change, or do I only want God to bless what is comfortable?

  3. In what area of my life is God trying to stretch me spiritually right now?

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for loving me enough not to leave me where I am. Help me to surrender the old habits, old thinking, and old ways that no longer align with You. Soften my heart where it has become hardened, fearful, or resistant to change. Teach me to trust You even when growth feels uncomfortable. Make me into a new wineskin that can carry the new things You are doing in my life. Amen.
