Scripture (1 Corinthians 13:11, NIV):
"When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child. I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways."
Devotional:
Growing up in Christ does not just mean getting older in years; it means learning to leg go of the childish habits that once ruled us. Paul reminds us that maturity in faith requires more than words - it requires transformation on our part as well. Children live by impulse, emotion, and short-term thinking. But as believers, we're called to rise above that, walking in wisdom, patience, and truth.
The world often applauds immaturity disguised as boldness: snapping back when offended, proving we are right at any cost, or living for attention instead of obedience. Jesus modeled something higher. He didn't waste His energy defending His reputation; instead He lived in such a way that even His enemies could not deny His authority. Spiritual maturity means we stop fighting for appearances and start living for Kingdom impact.
This isn't about perfection - it's about progression. Every day, the Holy Spirit nudges us to exchange our childish reactions for Christlike responses. Instead of bitterness, we learn forgiveness. Instead of jealousy, we practice gratitude. Instead of chasing approval, we rest in God's acceptance. Growing up in Jesus means learning to let Him reshape our hearts so our lives reflect His.
Questions to Consider:
Where in my life am I still responding in childish ways - through my words, thoughts, or reactions?
What would my life look like if "grew up" in this area and let Jesus guide my response instead?
Am I clinging to old patterns for comfort, or am I ready to trade them for Christlike maturity?
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that too often I hold on to childish ways - reacting out of pride, fear, or impatience. Today I surrender those habits to You. Teach me to grow up in Christ, to walk with wisdom, and to live with integrity that honors You. Replace my old patterns with new ones filled with love, humility, and obedience. Help me care less about proving myself and more about reflecting You. Thank You for never giving up on me, even when I stumble. Shape me day by day into the mature child of God that You've called me to be. Amen.
