Scripture (Proverbs 18:21, NKJV):

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

Devotional:

Yesterday, I found myself getting frustrated at work. I was learning new things, trying to keep up, and before I realized it, I was speaking negatively about myself out loud. “I’ll never get this figured out.” “I don’t understand any of this.” Sound familiar?

The problem wasn’t that I didn’t know everything yet. The problem was that I allowed frustration to become the loudest voice in the room. As Christians, we’re called to encourage one another, but sometimes we forget that includes encouraging ourselves. The words we speak matter. They don’t just affect us - they affect the people around us too.

Later, I realized that I wasn’t helping the situation. My teammates were trying to explain things, and instead of slowing down and asking better questions, I was letting my emotions take over. Looking back, I think I may have been the one who was confused, not them.

The beautiful thing about conviction is that it isn’t condemnation. God wasn’t standing over me with disappointment. He was gently reminding me that humility means being willing to learn. It means admitting when we don’t understand something without speaking defeat over ourselves. I’m new, I’m learning, and that’s okay.

Maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re in a season where everything feels overwhelming and you’re tempted to say, “I’ll never get this.” But what if instead of speaking defeat, we spoke faith?

What if we replaced “I’ll never figure this out” with “God is teaching me one step at a time”? What if we replaced frustration with gratitude for the opportunity to learn? None of us start as experts. We all begin as students. And sometimes the lesson God is teaching isn’t the task in front of us—it’s patience, humility, and the power of our words.

Questions to consider:

  1. What words have I been speaking over myself lately - faith-filled words or defeated words?

  2. Is there an area where God is asking me to be teachable instead of frustrated?

  3. How can I encourage someone else who is still learning, just as I am?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being patient with us while we learn and grow. Help us to guard our words and speak life instead of defeat. Give us humble hearts that are willing to learn, and remind us that making mistakes is part of the process. Teach us to extend the same grace to ourselves that You freely give to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ❤️🙏
