When God Says, "Stay"

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” — Luke 11:28 (NIV)
Yesterday, I had to make one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I felt like Jesus was asking me, “Are you going to stay comfortable, or are you going to trust Me and go where I’m leading you?” I don’t always know what the next step will look like, but I know I don’t want comfort to keep me from being obedient.
And then yesterday, God reminded me that obedience can put us exactly where we need to be. I was ready to leave after serving at church, but the conversation in my heart was pretty clear: “No, ma’am. You’re going to sit right there and wait until church is over.” So I stayed. I met someone who needed encouragement and community. She told me she had already reached out to a group at another church, so I said I’d introduce her to the leaders of our groups, too. Then she could meet everyone and decide which church and group felt right for her. My two friends talked with her, and she cried some more. It was such a beautiful moment. I just love my church people.
That might seem like a small thing to somebody else, but it meant the world to me. My disciple group has changed my life. They’ve shown me what it feels like to be loved, supported, and welcomed without having my past or my vulnerabilities held against me. They keep pointing me toward Jesus, and I’m grateful I got to help someone take a step toward that kind of community too.
God doesn’t only call us to follow Him for ourselves. He puts people in our path so we can love and serve them, too. Yesterday reminded me that when I listen - even when I’m tired, nervous, or ready to leave - God can use a simple moment to make somebody feel less alone.
Points to Ponder:
Is there an area where I’m choosing comfort instead of trusting God with my next step?
Have I felt a nudge to stay, speak, or show up for someone lately?
How can I help someone around me feel welcomed and loved this week?
Prayer:
Jesus, help me trust You when You ask me to step beyond what feels comfortable. Give me a willing heart and help me listen when You nudge me to stay, speak, or serve. Thank You for the people who have loved me and pointed me toward You. Please help me offer that same welcome and encouragement to others. Amen.
